Nasi minyak

One of Palembang (South Sumatra capital) speciality meal : Nasi minyak. It's translated as 'Oily Rice'.
In the photo (and usually), it is accompanied by some side dish : Kalbi (the brown one, some sort of soft beef stew), bean with coconut milk, and sour manggo with chilly.
Whoops, I couldn't find the image. I will add it later. The rice is yellow, so it's adding color to otherwise quite dull plate. And... I love hot things so I kight be biased, but believe me, the manggo chilly is superb! Well that's what I could say for now, bye

Tea Party with Mad Hatter! - So pretty. Lady Alice Tea Room

Hi! Sorry for the lack of updates... I mean...
I decide that I will start to post review the restaurant that I have visited now. I will give the address, so you could know how to go there. Mainly in Jakarta, but could also be in another city. Now I really am a food blogger, eh? I originally doesn't want to be one.

The first I will post is Lady Alice Tea Room, the one in Benton Junction Karawaci

Tea Party with Mad hatter!

I really have a great time here. My advice is : Eat on the second floor. The interior, furniture and scenery is way better than the ground floor.  And order their special-sounds-a-bit-weird tea.

Honestly, I don't really remember how the food taste like. I don't have a sweet tooth and never really keen on sandwich. What I remember is the overall experience. I love the decorations and interior and the furniture, as well as the teacups, pots, dishes, etc. it's all feels so vintage and classic, and like stepping into wonderland, and having the tea party with Madhater.

Me and my friends ordered the tea party packages as well as rose hibiscus tea. While I don't really remember how the cakes, scones, and sandwich taste (not bad, but not really good, maybe we choose the wrong variety of cakes), I remember the teas.

So Pretty. Much Classic. Very love.

The earl grey is so - so, they don't really left a strong impression, but the Rose Hibiscus tea - it's magnificent. I recommend ordering their special tea, Rose Hibiscus Vanilla Tea, and Fruit De La Passion Tea. One of it is too sweet to my liking, and Rose Hibiscus tea is a bit troublesome to drink because of the rose petals - we only have two, but both are delicious.
The chimney cake are delicious and unique, but I don't really feel that it is extraordinary, perhaps because we don't order any dipping.

They let us sit and chat as long as we like, and it's long. We even have a photo session! With the cake as well. The server is not overly nice, but they are nice enough to let us play as we want it. Really feels like stepping into a dream world, wonderland, or go back in time or to Britain where the tea time party is a reality.

All the other aspect lose to the atmosphere you will get if you let yourself absorb it :)

It's located in  Benton Junction, Jl. Boulevard Palem Raya, Cibodas, Tangerang
The Price range is quite high, so bring a group. The menu could be seen on Zomato here

Have a try!

Rempeyek

Wew, really... I have abandon this baby blog. Not my intention, really. Okay, so today I want to show you Rempeyek. Rempeyek is a chip made of flour, nuts, and herbs. Sometimes you could also find other ingredients, but that's the basic. It is salty and crunchy, just like chips, but you will feel full eating it.

See how much nuts is in it? It is not a really healthy food, and not calorie friendly given how much nuts is in it and how much oil is used to deep frying it. Anyway, it is quite good to try if you have the chance. Imagine fried nuts placed in one crunchy chips and once you bite, the crunchiness and saltiness spread into your mouth. All the time eating it, you will be met by constant crunchiness because of the nuts. Beside nuts, you could also find it covered with soy.

Name : Rempeyek
Type : Salty snack
Price : around Rp 5-10K per package

Getuk

Getuk, or the full name Getuk Lindri, is my most favourite traditional snack. It's tasty, filling, healthy, not over-sweet, and cheap. Very cheap for all we could get from it.

The taste is very Indonesian, but this snack don't use palm sugar, one ingredient that Indonesia traditional snack tend to overa use :D

Ingredients : ubi, coconut meat, sugar
Price : around $0.05/piece
Taste : sweet

Kuala Lumpur!

Now I am in Malaysia, and I'd like to share the food I found there. Actually we always eat at Chinatown since the food is quite similar to Indonesia so we just opt for an upgraded Chinese cuisine, since pork is so hard to find in our motherland.

So! Here are a few things I absolutely love :

This is called Siew Pao, I bought it from Moo Kee Confectionery near Petaling street for RM 1.5 each. It's like Bapao (pork filled bread) but instead of bread, the outer layer is puff pastry. It's so crunchy and savory, I love it!

Next, still from the same confectionery, Hello Kitty Mooncake for RM1. The taste is so-so.

After that, in the Petaling street I bought mochi. Not your ordinary mochi, though, it is flavoured mochi : Lychee, Ribena, Pandan, Pineapple, etc. It's RM 5

The last thing I found on Petaling street is this Hongkong Wife cake, and the green one is tambun cake. I bought it because of it's unique name, but the taste is so so. The price is RM 2.2 for the HK wife, and RM 1 for the tambun each.

Okay, that's it, I am only there for a day after all. Now I am moving to Melaka, and I will update what I found there. See ya!

Es Cendol (Iced Cendol)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/j57dyalwfxlkkq9/2014-03-30%2012.37.29.jpg
Hi there... It's been a busy months for me... But anyway, it shouldn't matter haha.
This time I want to introduce you to cendol. What is Cendol? Cendol is a traditional beverage in Indonesia, usually drank in the afternoon. Why, you ask? Well, because, you see, it is always iced. I don't know whether Cendol ever served hot, maybe it could, but I have never encountered it like that. Me myself will hate to have a hot Cendol because it is so sweet. The coldness reduce the sweetness a bit. It is one of my favourite beverages to drink. Imagine drinking a sweet iced refreshing beverages in mid-day... Hmm..

Cendol was a mix of coconut milk and brown sugar, and then the 'Cendol', the green thing you could see in the picture, is added. It is made from sagoo, I believe, and a perfect companion to the liquid part. It sadly always stuck at the bottom so usually I don't finish it. It has no taste, so once the liquid is gone it has no appeal on its own. Nevertheless, it is so delicious to drink it as a whole!

Price : Around Rp 5000 - Rp 10 000. You could get it in a restaurant for a maximum Rp 20.000
Ingedrients : Coconut milk, brown sugar, sagoo
Taste : sweet

Satay

How long have I not posting anything? Geez

Anyway now I want to introduce satay to you, or on our local language, Sate

I don't know whether satay is originally from Indonesia or what, I am quite sure this is not only found on Indonesia. After all, satay is only several chunks of seasoned meat, in Indonesia usually chicken or goat, stacked through one stick in appropriate amount and then grilled on top of coal grill. Quite like BBQ, but without the vegetables. Anyway, the unique point of satay is, I believe, the sauce. The hot nut sauce.

I love hot sauce, and nut sauce is one of my favourite sauce of Indonesian food. It mixed so well with soy sauce and chilly.

We usually eat this with rice or lontong, a kind of compresed rice. After that, we eat pickled cucumber and carrot. It was an awesome feast

Beside the usual chicken or goat satay, we have several kind of satay, but it's usually rare and a bit expensive. Like rabbit satay, pig satay, etc. We also have Sate padang, the one made with beef, with different sauce and wholy different taste.

Putu Ayu

Today I want to present you Putu Ayu, made by my friend Kezia, a Tourism student :). She doesn't share it with me tough, just the photo T_T
It is actually sold at traditional market in front of my house but I haven't buy it for a long time. One of my favourite cake among traditional cakes.
This is a traditional steamed cake, the flavor is mild, not too sweet, smooth, topped by shredded coconut meat with a bit of salt to balance it, and quite filling. And like many other Indonesian traditional food, it is made with coconut milk. The green color is from pandanus, a plant for traditional green dye and distinct aroma. Perfect for a quiet evening

Name : Putu Ayu
Type : Sweet cake
Ingedrients : Flour, sugar, egg coconut milk, coconut meat
Price : Around Rp 1.500 Rp-2.500 ($0.15 - $0.25) at traditional markets. In supermarket, the price would be doubled and the aroma is usually not so great

Cakwe

Today is Cakwe, my favourite street food from Medan, Indonesia. Actually, Medan host a lot of delicious snacks, but this one is my absolute favourite, I will be tempted to buy one everytime I see them sold.
Cakwe is some kind of fried cake, like doughtnut, but it is very different from doughnut. For one thing, donuts in Indonesia is associated with sweet taste, and Cakwe is usually suited the hot/sour taste more. It is also more chewy, and have a very light structure. It was most delicious eaten when freshly deep-fried, and then dipped into the sauce - some kind of unconcentrated hot-and-sweet chilly water - or the sauce poured into it, like what I prefer.

This is eaten by hand, no need to bother to try eating it with cutlery, it is very hard to cut and won't be as yummy. Usually, cakwe is sold with "Kue Bantal", literally translated "Cushion Cake". Sometimes cakwe also become a topping of dishes, cut into small pieces by scissors. One of the most usual dishes topped with cakwe is rice porridge

Name : Cakwe
Type : Fried food, salty cake
Ingedrients : flour, rising agent, salt, sauce is chilly, water and sugar
Price : I usually bought it $1 for 7 pieces, but could be more (Rp 1.500-Rp3000)

Serabi Solo

I don't really know whether this really originated from Solo, a place in Java, but this is a traditional cake called "Serabi", and Serabi Solo is one of my favourite type of Serabi. Yes, serabi has many varieties
This one is chocolate flavour one of serabi solo

Serabi solo is made from rice flour and coconut milk, steamed, like so many other Indonesian traditional cakes. The taste is sweet and then we can add toppings like chocolate milk or meises like this one, jackfruit, banana, cheese, and jams. It's soft and warm, and best eaten warm. Its really lost its appeal when you eat it cold

Name : Serabi Solo
Type : Sweet cake
Ingedrients : rice flour, coconut milk, yeast, sugar and toppings
Price : This variety is Rp 2.000 ($0.2) each

You could also add some fruit and jelly to it. It's reasonably cheap because usually the ingedrients is not expensive but giving us a new freshness in a hot afternoon

Name : Es Selasih
Type : Sweet, beverages
Price : Range, it is usually sold by front-of-elementary-school skewer for Rp 1.000 ($0.1) but if you get this in a restaurant you should expect to pay Rp 10.000-Rp 15.000 ($1-$1.5)

Permen Gula "Sugar Candy"

Everybody of my age in Indonesia ought to remember the sweetness of childhood through this sweet : Permen Gula

The name of this sweet if translated literally becomes "Sugar Candy". Sounds very sweet, huh? In fact, it is, because it's made entirely with sugar, but the sweetness is subtle. It is made with a mix of brown sugar and white sugar, melted together, dyed, and then shaped into particulary anything, and left until hard enough to bite.

You would see some of these sold with predetermined shapes (like flowers or birds), but if the seller is in the middle of making it, you could make a request and he will make it, as long as it is not too complicated. This is grouped as traditional snack and a bit hard to find in the cities, especially big ones. I often had this snack when I was really young, so this is a bit of nostalgia. It is cheap, too, you should be able to buy it for Rp 1.000-5.000
